Sustainability Policies in Business

Sustainable business policies are introduced to manage environmental and social impacts that can be controlled and changed to increase the long term longevity of the business and society in general.

Many businesses are now implementing sustainability managers and policies to improve sustainability performance in the work place. A major initiative of sustainable businesses is to eliminate or decrease the impact made on the environment. One factor of sustainable policies include establishing energy management systems by using environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources, such as replacing current inefficient light sources. When searching for ways to meet these sustainable policies, businesses now have the option of changing their lighting over to LED’s, which use less energy and reduces the carbon emissions produced by the use of electricity.

According to the Australian Greenhouse Office statistics, the use of electricity is responsible for 89% of commercial building greenhouse gas emissions. Specific operational energy applications principally responsible for greenhouse gas emissions are cooling (28%), air handling (22%), lighting (21%) and heating (13%).

LED lights use up to 90% less electricity, which immediately reduce electricity costs, not to mention that LED’s last up to five times longer than conventional lights, which means that businesses also save money on the costly expense of maintenance.

For a company who uses 38 35-50W halogen lights running 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks per year and who decides to replace these lights with an LED replacement, such as our Polaris XP 4W, the annual savings would be $2290.58.  Further cost savings would be expected in maintenance, recycling and increased air-conditioning efficiencies.  Using this example, the total carbon savings would 9.62 tonnes per annum, which is equivalent to pulling 3 cars off the road or saving 801 trees.

LED Light Works offer businesses a free lighting assessment to ensure that their infrastructure is LED ready and we have products available for almost any application and setting.  All of our lights [comply with the Australian safety standards] and we are one of few LED general illumination suppliers with products that are C-tick approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) who govern electrical appliances in Australia.
